Harry the HirerRichmond VIC Australia
Harry the Hirer is Australia’s largest events company. SJB Interiors renovation to their main showroom and head office in Burnley Street, Richmond mirrors this achievement.
While the façade of the striking 1940s building has been retained, the interior has been cleverly reworked. The building’s streamlined steel framed windows were a strong cue in the renovation, as were elements such as the original steel trusses and brick walls. While respecting the past, our aim was to create a functional, contemporary showroom and office. One of the main constraints with the previous arrangement was the configuration of spaces, with 60 percent allocated to ‘back of house’. Now each area is fully utilised to allow the various products for hire, from tables settings to loose chairs, to be displayed in a manner that reflects the occasion on that special day, whether it’s a wedding, a corporate event, or the impending racing season in Melbourne and other cities across Australia.
The entrance foyer, with its original windows and staircase with metal balustrade, makes a thoroughly modern statement thanks to the dramatic chandelier and panelled walls with linear LED features leading visitors into the main showroom. Past the entry, one moves into the double height showroom space complete with steel mesh panels installed to the upper walls and ceiling - lined with two layers of steel mesh and randomly spaced LED lighting to great effect. The existing brick walls were exfoliated allowing their aged surfaces to give presence in direct contrast to other finishes including the gloss white floors, intense blues and an extensive use of black steel in beam, frame or screen formats, acknowledging the building’s architectural history throughout the complex, while easily designating office and showroom spaces.
